Better Health Leads to a Better Career

So, you want to have a successful career?  You are in luck.  There are plenty of things you can do to make that happen.  In fact, I will list the top 5 things you should do if that is your goal.

  1. Show up to work (sounds like a no-brainer…but it isn’t).

  2. Exceed your performance expectations.

  3. Stay informed about major changes that impact your company and your role.

  4. Make strategic, mutually beneficial connections.

  5. Invest in your health.

Believe it or not, that last tip is the most important one of all.  This past year I’ve become more conscious of how I treat my mind, body and spirit.  I can honestly say that I notice a significant improvement in my day when I put my health first.  On the days that I pray, exercise, eat healthy food and maintain a positive mindset, I experience greater success in my career and every other area of my life.

 

Here are some career benefits of being healthy:

  • When we are healthy, our levels of focus, productivity and performance improve.

  • Our courage, wisdom and confidence grow stronger.

  • We look better, feel better and do better.

Sounds awesome, right?  Well…it ain’t that easy!   The list of things we “have” to do in order to be healthy seems endless: vitamins, cardio, vegetables, 8 hours of rest, 1-2 gallons of water, organic protein, whole grains, etc.  And when you are trying to be all you can be at work, it’s very tempting to put your health on the “someday” list.  But don’t worry.  If you simply incorporate one healthy habit into your daily routine, it will drastically improve your life so that you can bring a better version of yourself to work every day.

 

Choose an activity that is an easy commitment and work your way up from there.  If you can’t handle cross-fit training 5 times a week but you can manage to do 25 jumping jacks every day, you are off to a great start.  If you can’t stomach the idea of eating a salad for dinner but a green smoothie in the morning doesn’t sound too bad, you are off to a great start!  The goal is to increase these various habits over time until they become a new lifestyle.

 

There are many people with outstanding career accomplishments, but they also suffer from stress, illness and fatigue because they don’t take care of themselves.  Your health matters.  The last thing you want is to build a great career while neglecting your well-being.  Doing so will only limit your ability to truly enjoy success in the long term.   So start Investing in yourself today.  Your company, your career, and more importantly, your life will thank you.
