Figurings and So On

It’s taken me a while to get to this point. Recently I got the urge to start a blog hoping that by writing it out, I’d be able to figure out how I’m right where I want to be in life – yet not where I want to be in life at the same time. How the hell does that happen? Well, if I’m honest with myself, it’s because lately I’ve been walking down the depressing road of comparison.

My bestie makes an ungodly amount of money and I’m trying to figure out how I will ever catch up without cloning myself to work 20 different jobs everyday. My other bestie is traipsing around Europe and I’m trying to figure out when I will ever have an opportunity to use my virgin passport. And my boss, who is only 29, has reached the director level. And in my field the average age for that level is around 40. So in addition to all my other figurings, now I have to figure out how I’m going to reach the director level by the age of 28.

Now I know this sounds like a bitch-fest. That’s because it is. Or at least it was. I just stopped for a minute and reminded myself of what all sane adults know but sometimes forget – the grass is rarely greener on the other side. It’s probably just the sun shining extra bright that day. So let me take a few moments to reassess my situation. I’m 25, intelligent, successful, well-fed (food is important to me), well-paid AND happily married. I know there are some heifers out there wishing they had my grass.

So this goes out to anyone walking down that depressing road of comparison. It doesn’t have to be depressing if you can find comfort in a few things. First, while you are comparing yourself to others, those same individuals are comparing themselves to you and you probably have at least one thing worth coveting…so perk up a bit. And comparing yourself to others can be healthy if you channel it the right way. It makes you appreciate what you already have going for you. More importantly it inspires you to go out and get more, create more, laugh more – live more. So the next time your friend calls you gushing about the amazing sex she just had on the top of some mountain or how he just landed his first major account, don’t let it get you down. It’s just the swift kick in the ass you need to help you cherish what you already have and then figure out a way to go out and get more.
